Stop Killing Yourself!
Start living TODAY!
WARNING: I gotta vent today! Leave a comment below with your thoughts/comments
It REALLY, really bothers me when I witness people getting into an elevator only to go up ONE floor.
It REALLY drives me nuts when I witness people driving cars an extra 5 minutes in the parking lot to find the closest spot.
It REALLY frustrates me I can’t find anything healthy to eat at an airport.
It REALLY bothers me when people get on the bus then get off the very next stop.
It REALLY aggravates me when people ask me why I run so much. Better yet, they tell me its bad for my body.
It REALLY saddens me to see so many overweight kids.
I could go on forever, but I won’t. Everything I listed above I witnessed in one day! What has become of our society…..PURE LAZINESS! It kills me and its gonna kill the lazy people eventually and that is sad.
I’m not even sure what to do about it, but at least I can feel good about the fact that I’m in a position where I get to change peoples lives (and in a healthy way).
My #1 question to lazy people and those who do not make fitness a priority is: Do you love yourself?, Cuz if you do, why aren’t you taking care of your health? Oh, because of work? because you don’t have the time? You’re gonna start a program tomorrow? Nothing has helped you lose weight?
EXCUSES!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I’ve heard so many excuses in my 11 years of training I’m thinking of writing a book (I’ve heard some good ones)!
The second reason I write this today is because I CARE. I CARE about people I don’t even know. Why? Because I believe we are all meant to live a great life. I want others to be happy and live a better quality of life. However, people are literally killing themselves. And, these people are unwilling to take responsibility.
Hmmm, guess what? Remind yourself you are a fully functioning adult who’s ready to accept responsibility. Yep, you taking responsibility for yourself.
Look at your health. Is it good? Bad? Can it be better? Go ahead, pick your disease: diabetes, heart disease, stroke, cancer, obesity…….and many more
A quote I heard from a good fitness friend and nutritionist, Kevin Gianni: “If you treat your body like a train wreck expect to get ill”
Right now I encourage you to take a few minutes and analyze your current state of health. Can it be improved? Do you need to start a fitness program? If not you, then I bet you can think of a close friend or relative.
Think of all the reasons being healthy can do for you. Most importantly, it can mean a better quality of life!
For those of you who are active and live a healthy life, I applaud you. I hope others can learn from people like you and me who walk the walk and talk
As for me, I live healthy because I enjoy it and it is who I am. Real health is about daily habits, Again, How are yours? the talk when it comes to living a healthy life.
It is time for you to start getting ownership of your health, today.
The greatest gift you can give someone is be on the planet a little longer.
Lastly, here is my NO EXCUSES strength circuit that can be performed at home (and only takes 15 minutes)
- Jumping Jacks: 1 minute
- Pushups x 20
- PLANK hold: 1 minute (work up to 2 minute hold)
- Tricep Dips x 20
- Mountain Climbers: 1 minute
- Low Back Supermans x 20
3 Rounds Total.
Ok, please leave a comment and tell me about your current health status or your opinion on what I said in todays post.

I agree with so much of this. I just got the new role in my job of creating a brand new corporate Wellness Program for the all the employees of my company…and the company needs it! Anyone got any tips for getting started?
Amen Sister! I HATE excuses. Excuses are just reasons to fail and it seems all too easy for people to make excuses to not exercise while we make excuses to make time for exercise. I couldn’t have said it better myself. After almost 15 years, I’m no longer in the fitness industry BUT I still talk the talk and walk the walk and hope that I can still rub off on all the lazies out there. We, the non-lazies, are such a small segment of the population, a minority if you will and that is such a shame. On the MSN homepage this morning, there is a list of the Fattest to the Fittest States in the US. It’s a great read. No surprise who the top fattest states are. I’m sure that they’d be number one thru ten on the list for diabetes, heart disease and smoking related respiratory problems too. I totally agree with the top 10 states on the list as I see this everyday as a life insurance underwriter. And, diabetes is rampant!!! I could go on and on, but I’ll stop now.
Great blog post!
It REALLY bothers me when I’m running by the local hospital and I see health care “professionals” out there smoking on their breaks . . . while I’m trying to keep my body, mind and soul healthy by actually taking care of it. Oh, the irony!!!
Once my grandmother took the CAR to LITERALLY cross the street to come to my birthday BBQ (and my grandmother can walk). Then she couldn’t find parking so she drove around for like 10 minutes. Wow.
When I worked at Yorkdale mall I would watch people drive around for a long time looking for THE closest parking they could possibly get to the mall entrance so they wouldn’t have to walk to get to the… GYM. Huh?
You asked me if these people care about their own lives, but I always wonder – EVEN if they don’t care about themselves.. don’t they care about their children? Don’t they want to see their grandkids grow up? These are things I don’t understand.
Vanessa: good point. If you don’t care about yourself at least you can care about your family. I always feel like a nag when I get on my Dad for eating bad, but its because I love him and want him alive for as long as I can have him
Kathleen: I totally do not understand that one and I see it all the time too!
I’ve heard all the excuses in the world Kristie and it’s the one part of people I don’t understand. They don’t miss a conference call or meeting for work, but they will miss a workout session! Huh? People have their priorities all screwed up!
Chuck– I’ll send you an e-mail with some ideas. People love a challenge so try to come up with some sort of competition. look for my email
Yes, I know many people that wake me ask these same questions. It is sad.
Yeah, it sucks!! I see this every time I come back to the States. Alot of people back home think I’m crazy cause I LIKE to run. Not taking care of yourself seems just a little more crazy to me!!!
Go get em Jill
You’re awesome Jill. A true inspiration! =) I always smile, and remember why I run…each time a new blog pops up in my email box.
Run strong, and be well!
Michael
Amen. I, too, cannot stand it when people complain but are not willing to take action to fix the problems. I could rant on but you did such a stellar job, there is no need. I agree with you 100%. My rant would have gotten into health care costs and why we don’t prescribe exercise and diet changes BEFORE pills.
I am sad due to foot pain which sidelined me from my run yesterday. It was so difficult to “rest”. I run for health, sanity and to set a good example for my 3 young daughters.
Amy: i was so disgusted reading todays article on Dick Chaneys 5th heart attack. The list of the drugs he is on is ridiculous and no where in the article did they mention diet or exercise as a solution to his problem. Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!
Love it Jill! A woman after my own heart. Thanks for posting, it shows you care. Not easy for some peeps to hear what you have to say, but a very necessary message.
What really drives me crazy is when I am running outside and maybe just wearing some triathlon shorts and Under Armor and people drive and honk or yell things like “Nice shorts!”
I’m sorry, I just did a 50-mile bike ride and now I’m running 10- why do you care what I am wearing?
I notice also that none of these people who honk look like they are in shape at all…it’s like their angry form of jealousy?
kudos! More need to say it. My employer joined Virgin Health Care Miles which gives you a pedometer towards monetary rewards, but i got it to find out what shape i’m in.
I was surprised to learn i can walk between 1.5 and 11 miles just while i’m at work, but it is 1/4 mile max each time. Friends have heart troubles, so in Nov i quit smoking and May ran 5k by my house to set base data at 63 minutes (i could have walked that fast and not been so exhausted). So i joined a running club, where i quickly learned my breathing has deteriorated significantly in the last 22 years (now 58). Last week, in 90 degree heat, on our club run, i got a new record, jumping up from 400 yards, to 1.5 miles before i had to stop jogging and walk. The side effects are encouraging. Hair growth on my legs has resumed, scarring on my legs is decreasing (pre-diabetes?), and a few measureable improvements in my eyesight. I never go to the doctor, so i didn’t know i was so sedentary. Secondly, i took a woman to see a running club members band, and all the runners went out of their way to welcome her, tell her how good she looked, ask if there was anything she needed, and all the ways runners treat each other. She said she never knew there were so many caring and encouraging people. Sometimes we just don’t know how bad we are because we are never ill (or too obstinate to be), and worse, we don’t know what we are missing. Greatful everyday that we found each other and can welcome more. Sometimes all we can do is carry the message, so when the student is ready, the teacher will appear.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I totally agree! Right now, almost everything in our society promotes overweight, obesity, and sickness. I think many people have completely given up trying to live a healthy life. Many don’t even know what “a healthy life” even means. It makes me want to work harder every day to reach out to people and educate and motivate them. I’m not sure I would categorize this as laziness though, as much as a shift in priorities in our culture along with an overwhelming addition to food in the US. But, we can have a positive impact and help make people healthier.
Amen! Spot on….
